CHAPTER NINE

DIXON PROPPED the heels of his hands on the edge of the desk and leaned over until his face was very close to the administrative assistant’s. “I’ve been waiting to see Mr. Hyde for an hour now. I’m going to wait until he either comes through that door or jumps out the window. Since we’re on the fifth floor, I think the door would be a better choice. Why don’t you tell him again that I’m here? That’s Dixon Bell, in case you’ve forgotten.”

The young man blindly felt for the intercom button, his round eyes fixed on Dixon’s face.

“M-Mr. Hyde? M-M-Mr. Bell is...is s-still waiting to s-see you.”

“I told you to... Oh, never mind. Send him in.”

As the red-faced admin started out of his chair, Dixon held up a hand. “Thanks. I can find my way.” He crossed to the polished wood door marked District Attorney James Hyde and opened it wide. “Hey, Jimmy.”

“Dixon Bell.” The grin, the enthusiastic handshake, indicated that this was a meeting the D.A. had waited for all day long. “How are you? It’s been years since we saw you. I think Jessica mentioned she’d run into you recently downtown. Is she still beautiful, or what? Come in, come in. Have a seat. Can I get you a drink?”

“No, thanks.” But Dixon took the offered chair. “You’ve done yourself proud in your hometown. District Attorney Hyde. Very impressive.”

“I feel like I serve the community. That’s what counts. We’re gonna have to get you over for dinner some night soon. I’d love you to meet my boys.” He turned a frame standing on the desk so Dixon could see the family picture. “Gonna be great ballplayers, every one of them. That’s Jim Jr., there, he’s thirteen...Jeff, ten...and Alex, seven. We have a great time together, though Jessica feels outnumbered sometimes.”

“She’s a strong lady. I imagine she holds her own.”

“You got that right. Orders us all around with a lift of her finger.” He set the frame in its place, then looked up with every appearance of innocence. “So what can I do for you today? Not expecting to be arrested, are you?” He grinned.

Dixon didn’t grin back. Reaching into his suit coat, he pulled out the injunction and tossed it onto the desk in front of Jimmy Hyde. “Explain this to me, if you would.”

The D.A. picked up the paper, but he was looking at Dixon’s jacket. “Nice suit. I like good tailoring.”

“Thanks. There’s no place like Italy for clothes.”

Jimmy’s eyes widened. “Uh, yeah.” He opened the paper and read the contents. “Well, this is a court order barring you from pursuing further renovations on the house located at 111 Magnolia Lane. That would be Miss Daisy’s house, right?”

“Technically, the property belongs to me.”

“Oh. Well, then, you’re not supposed to work on the house until a hearing can be held.”

“Yes, I can read. What I don’t understand is where this came from and how it can possibly be legal to prevent a man from improving a house he owns.
